Trending Poker Variants in the USA

1 - Texas Hold'em

When it comes to popularity, Texas Hold'em is undoubtedly the poker king. The four-stage gameplay with a standard 52-card deck includes pre-flop, flop, turn, and river. Each player gets 2 private cards (hole cards).

The dealer lays out 5 community cards in stages (flop, turn, river). Players aim for the best 5-card hand using any combination of hole and community cards. Its popularity stems from its simplicity to learn and the strategic depth it offers.

1.1. The Beginning

Sign up at the poker room desk. When a spot opens, you can take your seat. Choose a limit (e.g., $1/$2) based on your comfort level. You may be asked to buy in with a minimum amount of poker chips (e.g., $100).

1.2. Understand the Poker Table Setup

Players’ turns come in the clockwise direction (starting from the dealer). The first two positions are Small Blind (SB) and Big Blind (BB), for whom the bet is compulsory. BB has to bet twice the SB, and the BB bet amount sets the threshold bet value for each player.  Next, each player is dealt two cards (hole cards). The player to the left of BB starts the action as discussed below.

1.3. Play the Hand in Betting Rounds

  • Pre-Flop – Players have four choices – CALL (bet the same amount as BB), RAISE (bet a higher value 2X/3X…10X), ALL IN (bet all the chips they hold), or FOLD (quit the game without betting anything). The round ends when all players have the same betting amount, and all the amounts/chips go into a pot.

  • Flop – The dealer opens 3 community cards on the poker table, which any player can use to form the 5-card best hand. Another round of betting starts with the player next to BB clockwise. The options are – CHECK (without placing any bet pass the turn to the next player on the left); BET (the player bets the minimum threshold value set by BB); and FOLD. Once a player chooses the BET option, the next players have to go with the CALL, RAISE, or FOLD option only. The round ends when every player has the same bet amount – all chips go into the pot.

  • Turn – The dealer opens the fourth community card, which initiates another round of betting as above.

  • River – The dealer opens the fifth community card, which initiates another round of betting as above.

  • Showdown – Players reveal hands. The best hand wins the pot.

Learn Hand Rankings (from highest to lowest)

Royal Flush

This unbeatable combination of hand value (same suit/pattern and highest five cards) in poker includes cards as follows: A♦ K♦ Q♦ J♦ 10♦. The combination is extremely rare and powerful, and wins automatically.

Straight Flush

Five consecutive cards of the same suit. Example: 9♣ 8♣ 7♣ 6♣ 5♣. Only beaten by a royal flush. Very rare and strong hand.

Four of a Kind

Four cards of the same rank, like J♠ J♦ J♥ J♣, plus one side card. Strong hand, rarely beaten unless against a straight or royal flush.

Full House

Three of a kind plus a pair. Example: Q♣ Q♦ Q♥ 7♠ 7♦. Strong hand, beats flushes and straights, often wins large pots.

Flush

The suit is common across five cards. However, the cards are not in sequence. Example: K♥ J♥ 9♥ 6♥ 2♥. Beats straights, but loses to a full house or a higher-ranking hand.

Straight

Five consecutive cards of mixed suits. Example: 10♣ 9♦ 8♠ 7♣ 6♥. Wins over three of a kind. Ace can be high or low.

Three of a Kind

Three cards of the same rank. Example: 8♠ 8♦ 8♥ 5♣ 2♦. Stronger than two pairs, weaker than straight. Also called "trips" or "sets."

Two Pair

Two sets of pairs plus one side card. Example: 10♠ 10♣ 4♦ 4♠ Q♣. Beats one pair. If tied, the highest pair decides the winner.

One Pair

Two cards of the same rank, like 7♠ 7♦, with three unrelated cards. Most common winning hand. A higher pair or kicker often determines the outcome.

High Card

No matching cards or sequence. The highest card wins. Example: A♠ 9♣ 7♦ 4♥ 2♣. Weakest hand, but sometimes enough when everyone else folds.

2 - Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO)

PLO is often recommended for players with advanced skills who have an appetite for fast-paced, action-heavy games and are comfortable with higher swings.

Similar to Texas Hold'em, this variant also uses a standard 52-card deck. In terms of hole cards, the key difference is that players get four hole cards instead of 2.  Wondering whether you need only one card from the community cards on the table to make the best 5-card hand? No, the limit is still there – you can use only 2 from the four hole cards and 3 from the community cards to make the target hand value.

2.1. What sets Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO) apart from Texas Hold'em

Unlike Texas Hold'em, which sets no limit on bets, here the game is played with pot-limit betting – you can only bet up to the size of the pot.

The presence of 4 hole cards favors more card combinations. Bigger and stronger hands are common. Bigger and stronger. Two pairs or a set might not hold up. Table setup, betting rounds, and hand rankings remain similar to Texas Hold'em. Though Hold’em has lower variance, it demands extensive strategy over time. Develop an understanding of combo-based hands and equity swings to master the PLO.

3 - Omaha Hi-Lo (Omaha 8 or Better)

Omaha Hi-Lo is a fast-paced, action-heavy, and moderate variance gameplay with big swings and high drama. This game appeals to players who enjoy strategic depth and multiple winning opportunities.

Similar to Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO), players get 4 hole cards and they must use exactly 2 hole cards + 3 community cards to form their best 5-card hand.

3.1. What sets Omaha Hi-Lo apart from Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO) and Texas Hold'em

Omaha Hi-Lo presents 3-tiered betting: Limit or Fixed Limit, sometimes Pot-Limit.  Remember, PLO always has the Pot-Limit – max bet is the size of the current pot, and Texas Hold'em typically has no limit.

However, unlike PLO/ Texas Hold'em, where the entire pot goes to the High hand player. Omaha Hi-Lo splits the pot. Half is for players with the best high hand, and half for the best qualifying low hand (must be 8 or lower, five unpaired cards).

The dual thinking for high and low hands keeps players engaged. Strategically, it’s simpler than Hi-Lo, but more complex than Texas Hold’em due to many draw possibilities. Unlike PLO, where players focus on building the strongest high hand (straights, flushes, full houses), in Omaha Hi-Lo, they aim to scoop both halves (e.g., nut flush + A-2 low).

Choosing the Best Online Casino for Poker: Checklist

1. Poker game variety

Find casinos offering Texas Hold’em, Omaha, Omaha Hi-Lo, or other popular variants of poker to play online. Despite some common similarities, every game demands a unique set of skills and strategies. Having the choice to play multiple games on one platform will help you apply your expertise and stay entertained.

2. Check for live dealer poker

Online live dealer poker games simulate the real-world casino feel. Games are streamed in real-time. Engage with a real human dealer and other players streamed in HD video. The setup delivers a social and immersive experience. If you love playing live dealer poker, make sure that the casino has got you covered and, most importantly, it has a well-trained, polite, and neutral dealer.

3. Check for favorable banking options

When playing online poker with real money, you must know what deposit methods are available to purchase poker chips and what reliable options you have for withdrawing your wins. And also know about minimum deposit, withdrawal limits, and withdrawal times.

4. Bonuses & promotions

The casino industry is so competitive that it is easy to find bonuses and promotional offers at each casino. They can come in ways like no-deposit bonuses, deposit matches, daily in-app rewards, and beyond. However, the abundance of choices makes it difficult to choose, as the freebies come with their pros and cons. Check the poker games for specific welcome bonuses or reload offers, along with their usability terms. Prefer low wagering requirements on bonus funds.

5. Platform usability

Ensure that the poker software has a user-friendly interface on desktop/mobile. The presence of mobile apps gives you the freedom to play from anywhere. Also, check for smooth lobby navigation and multi-tabling support.

6. Safety & licensing

Play poker only with casinos that have received a license from reputable authorities under your federal or state government. When playing with online poker sites, check for the presence of SSL encryption. It ensures the data exchange between you and the game server is protected.  Check reviews present on Trusted Gambler or other reliable networks to ensure that the poker casino has a proven track record of fair play and responsible gaming.

How many decks are used in Texas Hold’em poker?

In Texas Hold’em poker, a standard 52-card deck is used. Each player gets 2 private cards (hole cards). The dealer lays out 5 community cards in stages (flop, turn, river). Players make the best 5-card hand using any combination of hole and community cards.

Are there live dealer poker games online?

What qualifies as a low hand in Omaha Hi-Lo poker?

To qualify, a hand must consist of five unpaired cards ranked 8 or lower. Straights and flushes do not disqualify a low. The best low hand is A-2-3-4-5 (also called the "wheel"), which also counts as a straight for the high.

What is scooping?

Scooping is a rare situation in Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO), where a hand wins both the high and low. The entire pot (100%) goes to a single player, unlike when it's split between two players.

Can I use 3 or 4 hole cards in PLO?

No. Build your 5-card hand using exactly 2 hole cards and 3 community cards. Not more or less.

Why do strong Hold'em hands lose in PLO?

Hands that are considered strong in Hold'em, like top pair or even overpairs (e.g., AA with no help), are weaker in PLO due to frequent draws and stronger hand possibilities.
